Volunteering at the
Grønt Marked

Who we are

We are Flor and Clément, from Argentina and France respectively, and we’ve been living in Copenhagen for almost two years – and volunteering just as long.

How we found Grønt Marked

Before we moved to Denmark we lived in Barcelona for five years where we began to adopt a zero-waste mindset, part of which meant moving away from shopping at traditional supermarkets.

It therefore came as a bit of a surprise when we landed in Copenhagen and found there to be very limited options outside of supermarkets when it came to finding organic, local and plastic-free products.

We discovered Grønt Marked at the very start of its 2022 season – and what a nice surprise it was: filled with local producers offering just that as well as biodynamic products, and all plastic free! On that same day, we were also told the team was on the lookout for volunteers. As recently installed immigrants to this Viking country, and after spending our first winter here without knowing anyone, we saw it as an amazing opportunity to mingle with people with similar interests!

This month marks the start of our third season volunteering for the market and what a journey it has been! We are confident to say that we have met a lot of amazing people over this time, going out for dinners with some of the volunteers we have formed bonds with and taking part in farm visits with others. It has been a great way to meet like-minded people from a range of different backgrounds and nationalities and feel a little more connected to the city.

A typical volunteer shift

Every Sunday or so during season we volunteer for the afternoon shift, helping the team dismantle the tents after the market and pack everything inside the van and trailer. Some afternoons are sunny, others are rainy or even muddy, and some of the tasks are more physical than others. But we are all here to support each other anyway. What’s guaranteed every time: laughter, good vibes and sometimes – beers!

For us, the routine of the Sunday market makes it very easy to keep up with the faces we recognise, get to know them even better and meet new volunteers. We’re really looking forward to starting it all over again.
