ABOUT THE MARKET

What is the Grønt Marked

Grønt Marked is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of a community-based alternative food system supporting small-scale Danish produce and producers. Closing the gap between farm and fork, our project brings seasonal and local produce, and sustainable farming practices from the countryside to the city.

Based in Copenhagen since 2019, we welcome producers from Zealand, Bornholm, Fyn and Skåne. They bring to the city the best produce, and citizens have a chance to establish socio-economic relationships, learn about the history and origin of their produce, and directly support these small-scale farmers.

Grønt Marked is now in four different neighborhoods of Copenhagen (Refshaløen, Vesterbro, Nørrebro and from 2023 Fredriksberg), seeking to empower the communitarian essence of our city, and make a difference in its food system.

When you visit Grønt Marked you will meet producers who share our values of transparency in business, social responsibility, care for the environment, animal welfare, and sustainability in its broader essence.

They are hands-on in the field, sowing, cultivating, harvesting, milling, brewing, distilling, working hard all year around to not only offer people the freshest, most nutrition food, but to feed the environment and its ecosystems while pushing the agenda of a sustainable, regenerative farming further.

As a market, we feel proud to work with women and men who represent the future of the food industry as we see it.

As a citizen, you have the opportunity to be part of this community and to build strong direct and lasting relationship with the farmers, to really know by who and how our food is produced while becoming more conscious of its food choices. And also the chance to gain knowledge on the seasonality of the produces and their added value while purchasing quality, freshly harvested produce while sharing stories, expertise and of course delicious recipes.

If you are interested, please read how we are more than a market.

The people behind Grønt Marked

We are a small team who are all very invested in the market. We work our hardest to try and create a farmer’s market that is enjoyable for both the farmers and the market-goers.
We think it should be a joy to go out and buy fresh, real food from your local farmers – but also to actually meet, talk and sell to your customers.

Most all of us have second jobs, and most all of us come from somewhere within the food system:

Viola comes from the south of Sardinia.

She’s been studying, working, advocating, cooking and growing food for most of her life.
Like parsley and basil on top of a pasta dish, she turns up everywhere on Grønt Marked stuff.

Rich is from the UK.
He works as a miller at Kornby Mølle, a farmers market logistician and propagandist.
He has a background in food and economics, and his interest is (unsurprisingly) the political economy of food systems.

Mia comes from the countryside of the land down under.
Always cooking, always curious.
Her infinite energy and inventiveness are at the base of the Grønt Marked and Lille Bakery.
Mia is a kind soul, she cares and takes care of all of us.

Virginia is from Argentina.
She handles all the communication and beautiful story-telling behind the Grønt Marked.
Together with Owen, they work hard to make sure our markets and events reach all of you!

Julia comes from sunny Rio de Janeiro.
Julia does it all. She takes care of the volunteers and cooks at Lille Bakery on the daily.
This season she will also be the brain and hands behind the new Grønt Marked Kitchen.

Yunus is from Bornholm.

Over the last years he’s been taking care of fundraising – an essential part of the daily work when running a non-profit.
His
sharp and pragmatic mind helps the group when dealing with big decisions, and growing the association.

Gerard has grown up traveling the world.
He’s the handy-man, logistics-man and practical problem-solver of the Grønt Marked (our little gem).

Owen is from London and, after taking over from Virginia in 2023, handles all of the communications and storytelling at Grønt Marked. He has a history of helping non-profits tell the world what they are all about.

Then there’s sweet Otto; crafting and designing our website, there’s DJ Lars; the friend everyone wishes to have, one who can fix any problem big or small.

All together we organize, administer and run the Grønt Marked. Of course, there are many more heads and feet involved – without the many volunteers and helping hands, the market would never be possible. Thank you.

If you would like to work with us or volunteer at a market, we would always love to hear from you.

How the market started

The Grønt Marked was born in 2019, in a small island called Refshaleøen in Copenhagen.
At the time, Lille Bakery mobilised a group of their friends and associated businesses to put together something that was highly missed in the city: a farmers market!

From there the Grønt Market blossomed into a beautiful volunteer association of friends and food & farming enthusiasts whose main goal is to create a community event where everyone can meet with local producers and support sustainable farming.

Since then a lot of markets have been put up and taken down, in sunshine and in rain.

One of the intentions behind the market has always been to create a new fun tradition, one that isn’t so common in Denmark. The frequent trip to the farmers market is not part of the (at least recent) local culture.
Grønt Marked set out to be that. To be an alternative way for city folk to shop for food, shortening the knowledge gap from farm to fork. And ultimately, contributing to a healthier food system. That is why at the market stalls you will always find the producers and farmers themselves — it’s a great opportunity to ask questions, get rid of doubts and even get some recipe recommendations!

A market, is by definition a communal project. It is an active engagement towards a common goal, in this case creating free access to a platform where local, sustainable producers can be highlighted, where alternative relations to our food can be highlighted and new traditions can be created. It takes a village, but it is so worth it. The Grønt Marked is so grateful to all volunteers, farmers, supporters, visitors and believers without whom it wouldn’t exist!

Thank you — and see you at next farmers market!

We don’t do events. Farmers Markets are not an event for entertainment, but a regular monthly or weekly appointment for people to buy their groceries. The main goal is for producers to sell while establishing connections and for consumers to buy good and healthy food while learning about our food system. In order to guarantee successful markets, the focus should always be on the farmers and their produce.

What forms of payment do you take?

All the producers take MobilePay & cash. Some of them also accept cards.

Do you sell plastic bags?

We suggest you bring your own bags from home. Most producers use reusable or no packaging when possible. But cheese & juices are sometimes in plastic. All the producers use biodegradable materials to wrap produce when up to Health & Safety standards.

Is there a sheltered area in case of rain?

Grønt Marked is an open air market, so there are no covered areas.
